Lyon County Extension Youth Coordinator Talks About A Farm Safety Day, 4-H Camps, Multi-County Livestock Workshop

We recently spoke with County Youth Coordinator Jill Postma and she told us about a Farm Safety Day, 4-H Camps coming up and a multi-county Livestock Workshop in Osceola County coming up on May 30.

Extension, FFA, and Farm Bureau To Sponsor Safety Day For Kids At Lyon County Fairgrounds

There’s going to be a Safety Day coming up on June 11 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Commercial Building. It will run from 9 to 11:30 AM.

Pre-registration is required for Safety Day. Please return a signed release form by June 1.

Parents are welcome to stay for sessions.

*There will be a limit of 75 participants.

Mary M. Kruse age 91 of Little Rock, IA died Wednesday May 22, 2013 at the Sanford Hospital in Sheldon, IA.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 1, 2013 at Salem Reformed Church in Little Rock, IA with Rev. Michael Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery in Little Rock.

Visitation will be Friday, May 31st from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley, IA.

Harrisburg Man’s Vehicle Damaged In Car-Deer Accident

Rock Rapids, Iowa — On May 20 about 6:00 PM a Lyon County Sheriff Deputy came by a vehicle sitting along side of the road. He stopped and found out that Richard Hawley, age 69, of Harrisburg, SD, who was operating a 2012 Chevy Impala west on 180th Street and struck a deer that came out of the north ditch approximately 1/4 mile east of Beech Avenue. Hawley’s vehicle sustained approximately $2500.00 in damages. No injuries were reported.

Little Rock Woman Hits Deer

Little Rock, Iowa — On May 18th, 2013, at approximately 10:10 PM, Tina Malsam (36 years old) of Little Rock, Iowa, was northbound on Marsh Avenue approximately 1/2 mile south of 180th Street when a deer exited the west ditch and ran directly in front of Malsam’s vehicle. Malsam was unable to stop in time and struck the deer, causing approximately $1800 in damages to her 2004 Chevy Trailblazer.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM on Thursday May 23rd, 2013 at First Reformed Church in Doon, IA. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Doon, IA.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at First Reformed Church in Doon.

Rock Rapids Woman Jailed On Charges Including Assault On A Peace Officer

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids woman is behind bars after she was arrested on several charges including assault on a peace officer.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Sunday morning (5/11), one of their deputies arrested 54-year-old Margaret Jean Kramer of Rock Rapids.

Kramer was charged with Trespassing, a simple misdemeanor, Interference with Official Acts, a simple misdemeanor and Assaulting a Peace Officer, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Kramer is being held at the Lyon County Jail on a $2000 bond.

Woman Wanted On Identity Theft, Forgery Charges Arrested In Rock Rapids

Rock Rapids, Iowa — On Friday, May 17, 2013 at 9:00 PM the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office observed a wanted person walking on the 200 block of South Tama Street in Rock Rapids. The person was identified as Tasha Fischer, age 25, of Rock Rapids. She was subsequently arrested for failing to appear on identity theft and forgery charges.

Tena Klosterboer, age 96 of Rock Rapids, IA died on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23rd at Bethel Reformed Church in Little Rock, IA, with Rev. Matt Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 22nd from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Tena Anna Klosterboer was born March 11, 1917 to Jerry and Dea (Willms) Reck in Midland Township, Lyon County, Iowa. She attended country school through the eighth grade. She then became a “hired girl” to farmers’ wives in need of help.

Tena married Henry A. Klosterboer on January 25, 1939 at her parents’ home. They farmed in several locations in Nobles County, MN and Lyon County, IA. In May of 1975 Tena’s husband, Henry died after 36 years of marriage. Tena continued to farm with her youngest son until 1980, when she moved into Rock Rapids.

She was a life-long member of Bethel Reformed Church of rural Little Rock, IA. She was an active member of the Dorcas Society and the quilt committee for 20 years. She enjoyed sewing and volunteering at Dinner Date.

This past Saturday, May 18, 2013 Tena died at the Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids at the age of 96. She is survived by her five children, Arlen (wife, Arlene) Klosterboer of Bryan, TX, Darlene (husband, Elmer) Aeilts of Rock Rapids, IA, Charlene (husband, Dave) Marquart of Valley Springs, SD, Gerald (wife, Laura) Klosterboer of Zephyr Cove, NV and Dallis (wife, Kim) Klosterboer of Tampa, FL; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a brother, Peter Reck of Rock Rapids, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Dea Reck; her husband, Henry Klosterboer; and two grandchildren, Alan Aeilts and Darci Marquart.
