The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that they investigated the accident just before 11 PM on Friday night. They say 19-year-old Austin Koedam of Alvord was driving a 2001 Ford F-250 pickup when he went onto the yard of 2474 220th Street near Alvord. The place is owned by Bill Kock. Koedam struck a propane tank and electric pole on the yard and then left. He continued northbound on county road K30 from 220th St where he attempted to turn west onto a service raod. Koedam lost control of the pickup and went northwest off the roadway. The pickup went airborne, struck branches of a tree, and came to a rest in a grass pasture.
Koedam left the scene of the accident and was found by law enforcement officials at his home in Alvord. Koedam was then transported to Sanford Hospital, Rock Rapids by the Lyon County Ambulance for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident. A passenger in the vehicle, 19-year-old Amber Smith of Rock Valley was also found at his residence and transported to Sanford Rock Rapids by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
The propane tank and electric pole received about $3,500 in damage. The pickup received about $6,500 in damage.
Smith was cited for possession of alcohol underage, a simple misdemeanor. Charges for Koedam are pending.
Alvord Fire and Rescue, Lyon County Ambulance, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources assisted the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
